Captain Ben Zdan

A World-Class Angler’s Paradise

Summer’s nearly here, and while most folks crank up the AC, here at Ben O’fishal Charters, we crank up the engines! There’s no better way to escape the heat than with the wind in your face, chasing vibrant Mahi Mahi across the sparkling waters of the Florida Keys.

Birdwatching for Fish: A Different Approach

At Ben O’Fishal Charters, we like to do things a little differently. Instead of spending hours trolling aimlessly, we take a cue from nature: the birds! These feathered friends are excellent guides to where the action is. Here’s our approach:

Decoding Bird Behavior: Pay attention to how the birds fly. Are they zipping low and fast? They’re just going for a joyride. But if they’re hovering or flying erratically in one spot, they’ve likely found a school of baitfish. And where there’s bait, there are hungry predators like Mahi!

Positioning for Success: Mahi are pelagic fish, meaning they swim with the current. So, I like to position the boat west of the feeding frenzy. That puts us right in the path of the bigger Mahi as they chase the baitfish.

“I don’t wait for Mahi to find me, I actively hunt them down!”

Beyond Mahi: A Double Dose of Excitement!

The thrill of a Mahi fight is undeniable, but there’s always the chance for an even bigger surprise. Mahi often attract other predators sometimes even Blue Marlin! To be prepared for this epic encounter, I always keep a heavy-duty rod rigged with a 400lb leader, a 12/0 Mustad J hook, and a fighting spirit.

Florida Keys Mahi Mahi

Gear Up for Mahi Mania:

Our go-to weapon for Mahi is a simple but deadly combination: a rigged Ballyhoo with a 7/0 Mustad J hook. Here are some additional tips:

  • Leave a “Schoolie” Behind: When you land a smaller “schoolie” Mahi, consider leaving it on the line. These smaller fish often attract their larger buddies, keeping the party going!
  • Read the Water: Keep an eye out for current rips, weed lines, and floating debris. These areas often hold baitfish, attracting Mahi in the process.
